Some recent work in the philosophy of mind, biology, and cognitive science has questioned, in various ways, the idea that the mind and cognition are always confined to the skull. A heterogeneous collection of hypotheses and research programs--including the extended mind thesis and the embodied cognition movement in cognitive science and the philosophy of mind, and cognitive biology and the idea of bacteria cognition in the philosophy of biology and related biological sciences--have begun to take this idea seriously, in the sense of moving beyond philosophical probing to the development of ongoing research programs that re-think what cognition and the mind are. In this talk I will provide an overview of this cluster of work, and attempt to sort out better from worse arguments that arise in the course of debate over the ideas that it engages with. In doing so, I hope to raise some basic questions that will serve as productive encouragement for ongoing work on individuals and cognition in the biological, cognitive, and social sciences.
