Dr. Sturdy launches the workshop "Where is the Laboratory Now? 'Representation', 'Intervention', and 'Realism' in the 19th and 20th Century Biomedical Sciences".
Abstract:
"Translational medicine" has recently emerged as an area of considerable policy debate and funding activity, premised on the supposition that there is a radical disconnect between basic research and clinical innovation. But is this premise correct? Drawing on insights from the history and sociology of science and medicine, this lecture will reconsider the relationship between "bench" and "bedside", and ask whether we need a more critical understanding of the interests driving translational medicine.
3 Objectives of the seminar:
(1) Understanding the aims and limits of "translational medicine" and "knowledge translation" in medicine and health care.
(2) Appreciation of the historical context in which "translational medicine occurred".
(3) Assessing social and historical problems about the applicability and efficacy of knowledge translation from laboratory experimentation to health care application.
